Performing Maleness: UNCODING ME

Four costumes were designed based on the idea of transformation. During the performance, Charles Washington gradually undresses and goes through aspects of his father, his mother and his culture until Charles becomes a baby. For this work, his mother sent me traditional tartan, a woven fabric with a check pattern typical of Scotland. This was used to make products and new designs were printed on fabric by scanning, collage and media processing. The costume ideas are based on the Washington family's interests, which are sport, tradition and Highland chic.

In this work, Charles Washington wants to question his own self-development, his norms and values that have made him, as the protagonist of this play, what he is today: a white heterosexual man born in Scotland and living in Dresden.

Does ethnic, social and cultural origin determine who we are and how individuals see themselves? What else am I apart from what is written on my passport?
